I find it pretty hard to drag myself out of bed in winter. From the moment my alarm starts shaking its moneymaker, its a mental battle that sounds something like… “warm bed, cold floor, warm bed, cold floor”. The reality is that I am pretty lucky, my cold floor is covered in carpet and a steamy hot shower means that cold feeling last for only a few seconds. In so many places around the world during winter that cold feeling never ends for people living on the streets.

Veronika Scott was a 21 year old design student living in Detroit who each year bore witness to the brutality of winter on the homeless in the city. So she put her talents to use and created the Element S Coat, a waterproof, and self-heating garment that could easily transform into a sleeping bag at night and a bag during the day. Initially Veroinka made each of the coats herself by hand but the project grew and has now become The Empowerment Plan.

From their website the organisation is described as “The Empowerment Plan aims to help build a better life for those that have become trapped in the cycle of homelessness. We give homeless women jobs while in the shelter so that they can earn money, find a place to live, and gain back their independence for themselves and for their families. The coat is made by a group of homeless women who have been paid to learn and to produce the coats for those living on the streets. The focus is to create jobs for those who desire them, and to provide coats at no cost for those who need them.”

Maybe tomorrow I’ll spring out of bed and find a way to bring warmth to someone else’s life?

Continue to Be Awesome today good lookers!
